Top of a new build in Toronto. Andrew McLeod, Andy Wells and Chris Munro. Three of the best elevator consultants, colleagues and friends standing next to me. Hard hats, vests, and a skyline that these guys and KJA Consultants Inc. had a real hand in shaping.
I did not love heights when I started in this business with ATIS. And I still don't.
The rack and pinion hoist on the outside of a tower is the part people do not picture when they hear "elevator consulting." You step into a steel cage bolted to the side of a building and you ride down the exterior. Some of my best memories are on that ride. Some of my scariest ones are too. Usually the same ride.
What I remember most is not the buildings. It is who was in the cage with me.
You spend enough time doing uncomfortable work with the right people and it stops feeling like work. It starts feeling like a crew.
That is the thing I keep trying to build. Not the business. The crew.
The towers are still standing. So is the group.
