Someday my daughter is going to want to know who her dad actually was.
People ask why I post so often and that's the answer.
I'm building a record, and I don't want her piecing it together from a headline, a few photos, and whatever anyone else remembers.
So I write it down while I still can.
Not the polished version. A record of nothing but wins would be useless to her. It would also be a lie.
Mine says I was scared a lot. That I started things before I was ready and some of them failed. That I made more than my share of mistakes. That I built companies and sold companies and not one of those outcomes came from feeling ready.
That's me in the photo. Roping a plastic steer, at my age, with a rope I'm still learning to throw. I'm not good at this yet. I'm even worse from the saddle.
I started anyway. That's the part I want her to have.
Sometimes it's a deal. Sometimes it's my daughter. Often it's something I probably should have kept to myself. All of it goes in.
Some of you have told me it helped. That makes it even better!
I don't know how long I get to keep making things. Neither do you.
So say the thing. Write it down. Leave the record while you're still here to make it.
I'd rather she know me than be impressed by me.
