2am in Rome and I’m thinking about Marcus Aurelius.
Stood in front of him today. The most powerful man in the known world. Emperor of Rome. Commander of legions.
What survived him is a journal he never meant anyone to read.
Meditations is an emperor writing to himself about his own doubts. His impatience. His fear of waste. One line he kept coming back to:
“Confine yourself to the present.”
A man running an empire — reminding himself daily to stop time-traveling.
The performed version of Marcus is what we built statues of.
The honest version — the man taking private inventory of his own soul — is what we still read nearly 2,000 years later.
Performed strength ages badly.
Honest reflection compounds.
