Is Anyone Actually Driving This?

October 4, 2026 · 1 min read

My horse drifts toward the gate. He rushes when he's supposed to settle.

My trainer's read: he's testing me. I'm green, and he knows it.

She's right. Horses read hesitation. They find the edges of what you'll actually enforce, and they live there.

Last week I took a lesson and learned more in 10 minutes with the trainer than in weeks of riding on my own.

What landed: the testing wasn't defiance. It was a question. Is anyone actually driving this?

My horse asked it every time I hesitated, and my hesitation answered it.

People do the same thing.

Teams test new leaders. Clients test whether a term will hold. Kids test whether "no" means no. The people closest to us test whether what we say matches what we do.

It's rarely about undermining anyone. They need to know what's real. Where the line is. Whether the stated rule is the actual rule.

Answer the question clearly and the testing stops. Leave it ambiguous and they'll keep asking, louder.
