Somebody lost money making me happy this morning and I don't know who.
"We are processing your refund. You don't need to return the item back to us."
For about four seconds it felt like generosity.
Then the only question that matters showed up. Who ate that?
Somebody ran the math, decided the trucks and the labor and the shelf space cost more than the item, and absorbed the difference. I don't actually know who.
Depending on how that order was structured, it may have been the seller. And the seller may not have had a vote.
I've watched the same math in insurance. A carrier pays a small claim without adjusting it, because adjusting costs more than the claim.
The client experiences responsiveness. The cost doesn't vanish. It reappears at renewal, in a number nobody connects back to the courtesy.
Distribution runs on it too. Freight is never free. It is priced upstream, and the buyer who thinks he won on shipping paid for it in the unit.
Every frictionless experience has a cost center. If you can't find it, there's a decent chance you're standing in it.
I've made this call many times myself. Told the team to just eat it, it's cheaper than the argument. It was cheaper. It was also cheaper for us than it was for whoever it actually landed on.
The kindness was real. So was the invoice.
P.S. Does anyone want to buy a hammer?
